Deadly tornadoes tore through Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee on Friday, December 10th. The tornadoes were unexpected and wrought heartbreaking devastation.

Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky expects the death toll to exceed 100 people in his state. One tornado was on the ground for over 227 miles, 200 of which were in Kentucky. He shared, “I’ve got towns that are gone… you go door-to-door to check on people and see if they’re okay. There are no doors. The question is, is there somebody in the rubble of thousands upon thousands of structures.” The governor added, “It’s devastating.”

Gone in a Second

Autumn Kirks was one of the 110 employees working when the tornado approached. She was standing next to her boyfriend, when suddenly, she saw sky and lightning where a wall had been just moments before. She shared, “I remember taking my eyes off of him for a second, and then [my boyfriend] was gone.” Sadly, his death was confirmed Sunday afternoon. Kirks is one of the many Americans mourning the loss of a loved one after the storm.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Federal and local response teams are rushing to help, according to Beshear, and rescue efforts are going smoothly. A state of emergency has been declared and over 180 members of the National Guard are assisting with the search for survivors. Providing short and long term housing is a high priority to FEMA. Factory owner, Troy Propes, expressed that FEMA’s presence, “gives us all hope.”

Pope Francis has offered his prayers, asking God to give “comfort to those who mourn their loss and strength to all those affected by this immense tragedy.”
